How Coffee Taught Me How To Multiply And Divide by 4!!

Every country has a favorite drink! In Pakistan, the drink of choice was Chai. In the United States, people love their coffee.

As a newbie in the country, I was introduced to two interesting terms that were synonymous with coffee.

The servers at Tim Hortons taught me the term Double Double. Double Double became a frequent part of my vernacular since I enjoy my coffee with cream such that it has a blonde tinge and 2 spoons of sugar.

You may wonder, how does Double Double help in multiplying or dividing with 4. Let me explain, Double Double is a great phrase to multiply by 4.

For example, if we want to multiply 23 by 4, we can double 23 and then double the product again.

So if we double 23, we get 46.                                                                                                                          And then we double 46, so we get 92.

Here try a few examples of Double Double:

1. 15 x 4

2. 22 x 4

3. 33 x 4

4. 55 x 4

5. 25 x 4

Now that we got the advantage of using Double Double, let’s find out how to use Half & Half.

Half & Half is advantageous while dividing by 4 - just do the opposite of Double Double.

For example, if we were dividing 44/4, we will take Half of 44 and then Half of the new answer.

The steps would be 44/2 = 22 followed by 22/2 = 11, so 44/4 = 11.

Again do a few examples:

1. 56/4

2. 66/4

3. 48/4

4. 72/4

5. 90/4

So it doesn’t matter if you enjoy coffee or not, just remember Double Double and Half & Half  and you can easily multiply and divide by 4.
